 The Adoption Process

Brigadoon Rescue is an offshoot of my kennels and I have always been dedicated to helping all dogs in need.  These dogs can be ones that were dropped off here when an owner could no longer adequately care for them; the result of unpaid training/kennel bills and were abandoned here instead of an owner trying to work out a viable option; some dogs belonged to avid hunters who died and their widows brought them to me for care and yet others just showed up here.  People often ask us what the process is for adopting our rescue dogs. So we thought we would list it here to try and answer some common questions.

Every adopter must complete an adoption application. This helps us to learn more about the adopter and to help match dogs to people.  Please complete this form and mail it to us at 702 Fred Miller Road ~ Lexington, NC 27292.

Fencing is a requirement for rescue dogs. Most are hunting dogs and have had some training, yet they need exercise and a fenced yard is most practical.  Invisible fence is often a cost effective alternative to "hard" fence.  If you are planning on keeping the dog indoors we recommend you purchase a crate for the dog.  Ask us about the benefits of crate training when you call.

The adoption fee simply replaces the funds that we have already spent on the dog you choose to adopt.  Dogs are fully vaccinated prior to adoption.

NOTE: If you'd like our vet to check a dog out prior to adoption I can make arrangements for a vet check for a nominal fee (non-refundable).  Please call and we can discuss this option.

We require all dogs to be spayed/neutered within the first month of new ownership.  You can simply mail us a copy of the spay/neuter certificate from your vet as proof.  The environment here is controlled and no breeding - accidental or otherwise - takes place.  We don't want to contribute to the unwanted, neglected or abandoned pet population that is currently out there.

We keep the dogs on monthly heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative, while in our care and they are UTD on vaccinations.  We also pay for their food and necessary kennel supplies while they are with us.  (Donations of food and supplies are always welcome!)

Dogs are evaluated to determine their temperament and general health. We try our best to give as much information as possible about every animal up for adoption, but please remember that many times our ability to obtain information is limited. We try very hard to find homes for these dogs. We do not offer for adoption, any vicious or aggressive animals.

Although we make diligent efforts to ensure the optimum health of every animal made available for adoption, on occasion an adopted pet may become sick. If this occurs within the first week after adoption, please let us know.  We will allow you the opportunity to select another dog depending on the type of illness and proof of same from your veterinarian.  We will not accept any financial responsibility (including veterinarian bills) for the animal you have already adopted.

Please remember to bring the monies for the adoption fee with you when you come to pick up your new companion.  In order to allow you to take home your dog that day we request that these funds be cash only.  This way we don't potentially get stuck with returned checks & returned check fees.

We make NO profit from our rescue efforts!

If we were to realize any profits those monies will be donated to Victory Junction.  This is a special camp for children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses which provides life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun, and empowering, in a safe and medically-sound environment.  This camp is a member of the Hole in The Wall Gang Association founded by the actor Paul Newman.

Pointer Temperament

Pointers are even-tempered, congenial dogs happiest living indoors as part of the family. Pointers are affectionate and loyal. Their aggression level is very low to non-existent and they can happily co-exist with other dogs and often cats. Pointers are typically not territorial, although their size and bark will intimidate most people that come to your door. Pointers are very good with children, although young children and a clumsy young Pointer are often not the best combination.

While Pointers were bred to be a hunting dog, they are perfectly content given adequate exercise in a non-hunting home. Since they are a galloping breed, regular exercise is important for them, as it is for all sporting breeds. A securely fenced yard is a must to keep a Pointer safe since they are bred to hunt a good distance from their person. They typically do best indoors when they are left for the day. A well-exercised Pointer is a wonderful family member. Pointers are habitual "couch potatoes" who enjoy lounging on the family's chairs or sofas. This is a natural part of their desire to feel part of the pack.  He requires only an occasional brushing to remove dead hair.
